The followers of Sunni Islam, one of the two major branches of the tradition (the other is Shi'a), make up approximately 80 percent of the Muslim population in the world. The Sunni are the majority in most Islamic countries outside of Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and Bahrain. Sunna—translated variously as the "trodden path," "the way," "example," or "habitual practice"—refers to the example or path of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers. The Sunni and Shi'a both trace their differences to the 7th century C.E., when disagreements over the successor to the Prophet Muhammad arose. The Sunni maintain that the Muslim community was to select the Prophet's successor (caliph) to lead, whereas the Shi'a believe the Prophet chose his son-in-law, Ali, to be his successor. Although Sunnis and Shi'as agree on many theological and practical matters, the Sunni are typically seen as putting more emphasis on the power of God and his determination of human fate, and are often understood to be more inclusive in their definition of what it means to be a Muslim. The Sunni tradition has placed great emphasis on the role of religion in public and political life, with great weight placed on the Shariah (Islamic law) as the standard for a broad range of social issues—marriage, divorce, inheritance, commerce, and so on.

The Troubles were not a religious struggle, although they are often classified as such. It was a nationalist struggle of the Irish against British imperialism, although many people drew religion into it because they personally associated their religion with their nationality. Many weren't even very religious, and there were some Republican groups that were known for having large numbers of atheists who had left religion because they felt betrayed by the Catholic Church.

So, uh, kinda silly to classify the violence in Northern Ireland as religious violence.

Some estimates say that Muslims constitute 20 percentof the world's population. Although the exact demographics of the branches of Islam are disputed, most scholars believe that Sunni Muslims comprise 87-90 percent of the world's 1.5 billion Muslims.

Very useful information. I didn't even know 940,000,000 Sunni followers are existing in today's world!!
There are several things to like in Islam (no matter if anyone is Sunni or Shia follower):
-The concept of Omnipotence,Omniscience,Omnipresence and it's scientific that we are beyond our limit to imagine or visualize the creator of the universe.
-Absence of cast system's hierarchy (traditional Hinduism) among people by birth.
-People make sense and develop knowledge (automatically, without any extra effort given) of proper allocation of time from daily 5 times prayer.
Women gets proper respect from males for wearing Hijab and other body coverings, as nudity tends to increase in social nuisance. Attitude towards women in a society determines how that society should be. A calm, peace, nuisance free society requires good feedback to and from women species, as they are our best teachers at home.

Sunni Muslims are referred to "people of the tradition of Muhammad
and the consensus of the Ummah”. The Muslim usage of this term refers to the sayings and living habits of Muhammad. The Sunni are the majority in most Islamic countries outside of Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and Bahrain. Aside from Sunni, another branch of the religion is the Shi'as agree on many theological and practical matters, still they have a difference. Just like in choosing a leader.
The Sunni maintain that the Muslim community was to select the
Prophet's successor (caliph) to lead, whereas the Shi'a believe
the Prophet chose his son-in-law, Ali, to be hissuccessor.Obviously,
the Sunnis are putting more emphasis on that the power lies on the hands of God , and only God can control human fate. Even in Christianity, we are more like of having the same belief that God ,the father Almighty, has the power over this world. He who only knows the right time for everything and the right time for the opportunities in our lives. After all, we owe our lives to His son, right?Facts said that the Sunni tradition has placed great emphasis on the role of religion in public and political life. although many people drew religion into it because they personally associated their religion with their nationality. I have agreed with Mahfuz Ahmed Sayem . This article is very informative. The followers of Sunni Islam is about 940,000,000!! That was totally unknown to me. I am a Sunni Islam follows and it’s good to be hear that our population is greater than Shia’s.
But I do have a question. Why we all can’t live with peace by following one path – the peaceful path of Islam, the path of the Prophet Mohammad (SAW). I think there should be no Shia or Sunni. There should only muslim and Islam which is based on Quran and Sunnah. Great Allah sent Mahammad (SAW) as a guider of mankind and we all should follow his path and the rules and regulation of Islam. We should obey Allah and his Messenger (SAW).
Let’s not say who’s right and who’s wrong, who’s going to jannat and who isn’t who’s a muslim and who’s a kafir because we, ourselves don’t know our own fate. Leave the knowledge of the Almighty Knower of the unseen Allah.
